The highlight of our trip was the day we rented a car. Fantastic time, warm breeze and the magnificent scent of the figs which we ended up picking from the tree by the street side made a perfect beginning of our adventure. The first in line was a more rocky side of the island. If you didn’t know that the island is practically divided into two parts, now you do. The beaches are covered with sand on one side, and you need to fight with the big rocks to get into the water on the other.
During the ride, we had four stops, and they went like this:
First Stop – the breathtaking 2000 years old olive tree which is believed to be second by its age in the world. We were able to taste the flavor of Zakynthos outside the tourist section, visit small local shops and purchase products the proprietors made themselves. It was overwhelming to stand in the same spot where people for centuries praised certain beliefs, religion, and legends. We experienced the Zakynthos history at first hand with this small Exo Chora village.
We could see many magnificent views during our trip, and one of them was Cliffs of Keri. That was our Second Stop.
The coastal view which overlooked the cobalt-blue sea, unusual rock formation and the lighthouse which was fenced off waited for us there.
We heard that there is also the biggest flag in the world. However, it was wrapper so, apart from fantastic view, we didn’t have too much to do there.
The people made a small coffee shop out of old trailer where they sell drinks and snacks, but nothing spectacular. We even heard that the place is private property, and to go lower to see the rocks, you need to spend some money first in the ‘restaurant,’ but nobody said anything when we entered. The view got all the points, but apart from that, 10min was enough time. Was it worth to ride for a half an hour on a tiny road, for us yes! We made excellent footage there, but for people who are more gourmet types, definitely not!
Third stop – Porto Roxa tourist attraction. Beautiful turquoise and crystal-clear water with a remarkable cave caught our attention. Taverns, however, were pricey, but we were on vacation, and we don’t have the chance to enjoy such view and atmosphere every day.
The water was cold but pretty enjoyable. However, the entrance to the sea bothered us the most. The thing is, there wasn’t any! We needed to get down on our own, leave our things alone, and figure out how to climb back up before we get into the water. Challenging, but not impossible.
The drone which we got up in the air had some problems with satellite signals, and it drove right between two thick power cables. Not knowing what happened, we landed it and then, on the footage, saw what the deal was. Despite the incident and avoided disaster which almost caused heart attack to Srdjan, the water was perfect, so we moved on full of the impressions. Was it worth it – yes, yes and YES!
Our next and Fourth Stop was in front of us – the journey to the viewpoint above famous Navagio Beach. The crowd was huge, about ten buses full of people at the time, the uncountable number of cars, and all of them waited to get to the little drawn out sort of pavement with the fence, to see the beach. On the right side, we could see people who walked through small, rocky road to the highest and most drawn out point of the cliff. We decided to follow them, so after 15 minutes found ourselves on a massive and shiny cliff from where we could see the magnificent view.
We argued there precisely because of that shiny cliff and became the object of interest of many people, who, thanks to us, got both the view and the show. One of us stood, and the other posed – it isn’t so hard to guess who’s who. While I sat there, I was thinking about the people who were on the beach – the looked like little grains of sand. Initially, I did not pay attention where I was, and it was as if I suddenly woke up. I started to panic and attacked Srdjan who was standing on that shiny cliff with all his equipment in his hands. He tried to make a good photo, but can you imagine the fear of a person who is afraid of height while facing that same fear. I can – and now, Srdjan also. The people stood there and looked at me while I was waving with my hands and yelling at him to come down, and he was screaming back at me to calm down so he could finish the photo. Can I complain about the picture? No. Was it easy? Also no.
As we walked towards the car, we slowly began to notice the tingling on our shoulders and they started to burn.
We walked forth and back on that cliff, with the strong wind cooling us down, not knowing that we are burning in the sun. So the first tip if you go there is – wear either the swimsuit and a lot of sunscreens, or long sleeve shirt, including something to protect your face. The view was stunning, the sun was savage, and out fourth and last stop was finished.
